Rules of the Road from the Billings Lions Lions Club 2006-2007

The rules below are good ones to follow as we work to help others and our community. They are listed with the most important at the top.

  1. Have Fun! Lions that enjoy their work are infectious. Nothing makes volunteers more productive than leaving activities with a smile on their face instead of a frown.

  2. Never embarrass us.
Credibility is the Club’s currency.  Make deposits, not withdrawals.

  3. Seek the “better place.”
Leadership’s primary task is to identify and inspire improvement. Uncertainty associated with change feeds anxiety. Clearly describe where we’re going and why we’re going there.

  4. Think.
Listen to what others say.  Roll the issue around in your mind.  Examine the situation from multiple perspectives (structural, personal, political, symbolic) before coming to a conclusion.  Let Club business follow its course: Members suggest; Committees then propose; the Board in turn endorses; and, last, the Club adopts (or not).

  5. All ties go to the runner.
Encourage an “action” bias.  Be results oriented.  Give the benefit of the doubt to those trying to get something done.

  6. Character, courage, conviction.
Know the difference between right and wrong.  Choose to do the right thing.  Never give up.

  7. We train people how to treat us.
Clearly communicate acceptable performance and conduct.  Hold yourself and others accountable but never put down any Lion or activity.  Remember there is a difference between constructive criticism and griping.  Refer often to rule number three.

  8. An apology should be as public and sincere as the offense.
Adults take their medicine without making faces.  Success comes with cooperation and trust – both of which are earned and are undermined by lingering animosity.

  9. Give respect to those on the front line.
Committee Chairs are responsible for most accomplishments of the Club.  Do what you can to make their burden a little lighter.  Officers and Directors were elected to serve the club as a whole - not to run every activity.

  10. Show humility, compassion, and appreciation.
You are not the center of the universe.  The real purpose of Lionism is to serve others while helping ourselves.

  11. Remember that it’s other peoples’ money.
Someone worked hard to earn that money you’re spending Mr/Ms Benefactor.  Pay attention to details when administering project funds.
